Gawith Hoggarth Bulk: BLACK IRISH 'X' TWIST

GH2BLK-1oz

Notify me when this product is available:

All our twist tobacco varieties are manufactured by the same spinning process using dark fired wrapper leaves. The filler is again, predominantly dark fired leaf with the addition of a small percentage of dark air cured Indian leaf. They are therefore strong tobaccos. Black Twist, because the cooking process removes some of the stronger tar and nicotine elements, provides a milder smoke than the brown twist.

Got some of this in a trade, and I was excited, because I had never smoked any Twist before. I am a pipe smoker with over 40 years experience, mostly with aromatics. I smoked this in a Missouri Meerschaum Diplomat. The pouch aroma was of a strong cigar, like a Punch. It complied, packed and lit well. The first puff almost knocked me across the room. It was like a really strong cigar. The taste was pure strong brown burly, like 5 Brothers on steroids. All the houseplants died....even the plastic ones. I could only smoke about half a bowl before the room started spinning, and nausea set in. I had to go lay down for around 45 minutes before I started feeling better. Well, now I know. I will leave twists to those who are a little more resilient than I.

Gawith & Hoggarth Black Irish Twist

This tobacco is not the most aesthetically pleasing, but the variety keeps the pipe smoking hobby interesting. The smell for me is pretty difficult to define. It smells and tastes like the black part of a steak. I smoke this only on a special occasion after a good meal, because it is extremely strong. The flavour itself is surprisingly mild, with no tongue bite.

A Challenging Tobacco

Black Irish Twist is a challenging tobacco. It tastes odd in a way I can't really explain and possesses an unusual strength. Best sliced thinly, dried and very gently smoked in a small bowl and with a full stomach. Doesn't bite and a little goes a long way. Can be used as a mixing tobacco to strengthen weaker blends. Not everyone's all day choice, but useful when you need a quick, smooth and satisfying smoke of something very much in a league all of its own. In terms of full flavour you'll have never smoked anything like this. Recommended but with reservations.
