This is my first time with St James. Fresh from the tin it needed drying like most flakes. I would place it closer to Full Virginia Flake (of which I have many tins cellared) than a va/per like Escudo. Thankfully lacking any casing, this smoked well and delivers a more interesting experience than FVF. Tongue bite was minimal or absent. Its availability challenges are somewhat of an impediment to the curious but I think you’re not missing out on a transcendent experience - though my opinion may well improve as the tin dries gets closer to empty.
Nice little VaPer flake, although I’m more partial to Evening Flake, or Former’s straight grain.
Still, anything from Gawith isn’t going to be of top quality.
This stuff is great! Give it a little bit of drying time and then it’ll light easy.
Famously one of the world’s greatest Va/Per’s and one more tin is always a good investment. Especially after a global supply crunch, where none was available near me for a year.
Always has that prized tin note, near good enough to eat the leaf.
A very slow burning old school tobacco. And yes it’s always a tad damp but it just makes the anticipation build as you wait for it, like a good wine to breathe.
This year’s vintage is a touch milder than the 250gr boxes I purchased years ago. But something is better than nothing.
Glad it’s back and hopefully to stay. It’s been a constant in my cellar since I discovered it many years ago. So many Va/per’s but only one St James.
Great
