Gawith & Hoggarth's Louisiana Perique Flake is a dark, richly flavored Vaper with a nice, gentle sweetness, and a deep, almost woody Perique bottom notes -- all seasoned lightly with a Lakeland style scent. My supply arrived in May, 2010, and the dark, thinly sliced flakes were too long, and too fragile, to store conveniently in half-pint Mason jars, so I immediately rubbed-out all of it before jarring and cellaring. From the jar it has a pleasant, slightly sweet, and slightly fruity aroma, which is pretty consistent with the taste of the smoke. A few seconds under a hot air blower dries it out to perfection. Rubbed-out, it packs, lights and burns very well, producing a good volume of chewy, luxurious smoke. It has a very mild Lakeland style scent (somewhat floral and soapy); a mild and only slightly sweet Va flavor; and a rich Perique taste that is more chocolatey than fruity, and not very peppery. It is a flavor matrix that goes very well with coffee. It has medium body, medium strength, and medium-to-full flavor -- a combo that makes for a very smooth smoke at any time of the day. It burns cleanly, and dryly to the bottom without gurgle or goop; and surprisingly, it doesn't ghost a briar very deeply; but still, I would recommend using a pipe dedicated to the Lakeland blends.
