This is the premium pipe tobacco ever: with all it’s centuries old re-incarnations from 18th Century twists to modern day; it has a real depth of taste and strength. Brown and the less powerful Black Twist aren’t pipe tobacco’s for the beginner or those who like non tobacco flavours. It takes time and experience to fully appreciate these wonderful tobacco’s. God bless Gawith Hoggarth and Samuel Gawith for continuing to give us such a quality product!
I’ve been a pipe smoker for 60 years just to put the above remarks in perspective.
A blast from the past, and I mean Blast! Very strong, requires respect and care. I'm not an all day smoker, sometimes not even an everyday smoker. So needless to say, the nicotine was already kicking in upon lighting! Has one of the most amazing tin notes! Flavour wasn't overly strong in my opinion, but perhaps that is a good thing with the strength this rope holds. Burned to a very white ash, tastes great all the way through the bowl; even if you have to relight later in the day. I have not yet had a situation where I felt like trying a chew of it, but gave a friend a couple slices and he was a bit overwhelmed (he's used to redman chew). To prepare, all i did was slice into coins about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick, the rubbed it out in the palm of my hands. Broke up very easily into a nice light shredded texture, and burned quite easily. Did not require any additional drying this way. I think every pipe smoker should buy at least a little bit of this tobacco and cellar it in mason jars in a cool dark place. Just seems like a great novelty tobacco to try, and even if it's not your favorite, it is a great tobacco to cellar and see how it mellows with age. Just make sure to use new clean lids, ensuring there is not a speck of tobacco or any other debris on the seal and it will be as good as a factory tin.
